Of Sloths and Love

I think by now we have established that yours truly is a bit of a nerd. And believe it or not, I'm about to rock your world with an even nerdier story ... Nathan and I started dating just a couple months before Valentine's Day during my sophomore year of college at (the best) Miami University (of Ohio). He was a junior and I was intimidated, but that didn't deter me from sharing my love of sloths with him. You'd think I would play it cool, but that's just not how I rolled. "They're so cute!" "They move soooo slow!" I have no idea what the fascination was. (Kristen Bell gets it.)

Fast forward a couple months to Feb. 14, 2005 ...

I came back to my dorm after class, opened the door and the cutest stuffed sloth (stuffed animal, not like a taxidermied sloth!) was sitting on my desk with a card from Nathan. Not only did he embrace my love of sloths, he searched high and low for that thing. Sylvia, as we later named her, came all the way from England. It was probably about that moment that I knew Nathan was the one for me.

Eight years later, here we are celebrating another Valentine's Day. Nathan still embraces all my weirdness and still makes me feel special in spite of it. And I love him for it. :)

Valentine's Day

One of the very first pictures we took at a formal in 2004. We look like babies!

Winter Sun

How valuable it is in these short days, threading through empty maple branches, the lacy-needled sugar pines.

...

We can make do with so little, just the hint of warmth, the slanted light.

The way we stand there, soaking it in, mittened fingers reaching.

365 Day Photo Challenge: January

A couple years ago I tried to complete a 365 day photo challenge only to fail halfway through the year. I realllly wanted to try again (per my 101 in 1001), but I decided it would be way more manageable if I used my phone instead of lugging my big camera around every where I went. You never know when creativity will strike! I've been Instagramming my project here, if you want to follow along in real time. :) My January in a nutshell: Rang in the new year in Chicago with some awesome friends * Started working out more regularly again * Started eating healthier again * Had some downtime * Photographed lots of sessions * Painted a room in our house a super bold color * Had lots of coffee dates * Saw Kevin Nealon * Treated clients to Sweetie Fry * Celebrated my little brother's birthday * Had pizza with my BFF * Worked on my office ... and then worked some more * Tortured myself with Insanity * Took a trip to Breckinridge * Attempted to ski * Nursed my sore muscles with a margarita * Took one day off * Ate fondue * Got lots of snow * Hung out with my cute assistant * Got lots more snow * Tried Lopez with friends * Watched The Bachelor (yes, I did) * Got featured in the Plain Dealer

Breckenridge, Colorado | Travel

Breckenridge Colorado I love taking photographs. I really do. But it is my job, as well as my hobby, so when I'm on vacation I tend to want to put the camera away and enjoy the time without a camera in front of my face. It's hard because my mind is wired to constantly take pictures so moments can always be remembered. Sometimes (a lot of times) I have to remind myself that I'll remember the moments even better if I truly experience them for myself.

When we were on vacation in Breckenridge, Colo., with Nathan's family this last week I really tried to soak it all in and keep my camera in it's bag most of the time. Nathan got some shots with his point-and-shoot, so this blog post is a compilation of both of our cameras.

Our time in Breckenridge was like no other vacation I've had. It was athletic and I'm not a skier, so I was sore. I've never been sore on a vacation. :) That said, it was refreshing to change it up and see the mountains of Colorado. It is so beautiful out West, that's for sure! Breckenridge is this picture-perfect mountain town that seems too cute to be real. I loved walking the streets and admiring the quaint houses and shops ... and the Christmas lights were up all around town. Love it!

We started at Casa Bonita in Denver. SO much going on ...

I did not attempt slopes that looked like this ...

A little hot tub time was necessary after a day of skiing.
