For the Love of Brunch | Peaches and Scones

Peaches and Scones Nathan and I have a slight obsession with brunch. Like, for real … we even had a brunch wedding reception! Thanks to my brother, who also enjoys that glorious mid-morning meal, we're slowly eating our way through his list of the best Cleveland brunches. My mouth is watering just thinking about pancakes and omelets! We're not opposed to making our own brunches either, and we've racked up quite a few awesome recipes that make the perfect Saturday morning meal.

It's all about the little things, right? Well, these sugared scones I'm about to share with you are little, but they are big in the delicious factor. They're not too sweet, which makes them OK for breakfast, but they're sweet enough that you want to jump out of bed for the treat. I made them recently as the base of a peach shortcake (just add ice cream! Or vanilla bean whipped cream as they're shown here). Also delicious. The best part is that you probably have all these ingredients in your cupboard already. What are you waiting for?

Sugared Scones with Peaches (via Everyday Occasions) (makes 12) 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup sugar 1 T baking powder 1/2 t sea salt 12 T cold, unsalted butter, diced 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup cold heavy cream 1 t vanilla egg yolk course sanding sugar (I used Penzey's vanilla sugar)

In a mixer, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut the cold butter into 1/2 inch pieces. Add the butter to the dry ingredients and mix on low until the butter is mixed in and is the size of peas. In a separate bowl, mix together eggs, whipping cream and vanilla with a fork. Turn the mixer on low and slowly add the cream and egg mixture. Turn off the mixer once added.

Turn the dough out onto the floured surface. Divide into two. Add some flour onto the top of the dough then pat it out into two disks, about 6 inches in diameter. Cut the disks into six pieces like a pie.

Separate the pieces and put them on a lightly greased baking sheet. Brush on a little bit of a beaten egg yolk, then top with sugar.

Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes. (I had to go longer than this, but I took them out as soon as they were golden brown on top.)

Let scones cool and top with freshly cut peaches mixed with a little sugar and lemon juice. Enjoy!

Ali & Ian | Pinecroft Estate Cincinnati Wedding

Pinecroft Estate Cincinnati Ohio WeddingThey met over a beer and a football game. Ian had agreed to be the wingman for a friend who was interested in Ali. He took his job seriously and stayed on the outskirts of the conversation.

"We were at an Irish Pub in Hyde Park when she walked in," Ian remembered. "I actually remember her entering the premise. This is more of a compliment, but I could tell this girl went to a) Miami University or b) Miami University." [Hahaha, you know I'm laughing at that.] "Needless to say, I thought she was very attractive."

After quite a bit of football talk, Ian's friend realized that he should really be the wingman to Ian, and decided to step aside. (What an awesome friend, right?!) A few months later and Ian and Ali were falling.

"My overall favorite thing about Ian is his ability to bring the best out of people with his friendly, positive personality," Ali said. "People just natural gravitate towards him because of his amazing character."

I couldn't agree more! Ian was friends with my roommates when I lived in Cincinnati, and he was always, always kind and friendly and inclusive. Ali compliments him so perfectly. Together they are a fun-loving, genuine couple that cares so deeply for their family and friends. And they are so loved right back. Just one step into their reception and you could feel the love and energy floating around.

Ian and Ali, thank you for the most wonderful photography experience. You two are gems, and I wish you a hundred years of happiness together.

Sarah & Bobby | Xavier University Engagement

Xavier University Engagement PhotosYou know those people who come into your life for only a short amount of time but you wish you could just keep them right where they are for a little while longer? That's Sarah for me. She and I coached gymnastics for a year together in Cincinnati and it wasn't long enough! Sarah is a really good person. Really good. And she's a fantastic coach and so popular with the girls. We're both coaching again, but in different states, and I wish I could just transport her to my new gym. :) She makes everything more fun, even a photo session!

Sarah and Bobby are getting married later this summer in St. Louis (oh how I WISH I could photograph their wedding!), but wanted to document an important time in their lives--college at Xavier University in Cincy where they met. How cool is it that they're both originally from St. Louis, just happened to attend a little college called Xavier (three states away!) and met at the beginning of their time in Cincy? So cool!

We really trekked around campus (which just happens to be right near MY old Cincinnati stomping grounds) to capture them in all the good spots ...

Xavier University Engagement Photos Xavier's basketball team is GOOD. Sarah and Bobby saw lots of games in this arena!

June Goals

Jeremy Kester HH Boogie Ah, June. The most popular wedding month of the year. (Actually, I'm not sure that's proven. Don't quote me on it! ;) ) In light of a busy, busy month over here at Lane Baldwin Photography, I'm keeping my goals simple and fun this month. And I'm remembering my time at H.H. Boogie Unshop just a few weeks ago, where we slowed life down to listen and laugh and rest, and occasionally shoot (that photo of me up there was taken by the lovely Carolyn Ann Photography with my first roll of Kodak Portra 400 film! It looks peaceful, right? It was! And I bet you would never guess that I was surrounded by furry llamas). More on Unshop soon!

  • Read two books (25 in 12): Girl Meets God by Lauren Winner and The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon (I'm a little behind here but hoping to catch up this month!)
  • Take one day completely OFF a week
  • Finish entryway
  • Have a firepit. Roast s'mores
  • Try a new (to us), local brunch spot
  • Work out 4/week
  • Keep up with no longer than a three week turnaround on weddings
  • Start refining my message
  • Submit two weddings
  • Turn 29 in style!
